Global Outreach - A Unique Catholic Student Exchange Program

Mission
Global Outreach, a Catholic exchange program, is committed to the building of a civilization of love in Central/Eastern Europe as well as in the United States through the formation of young, dynamic Catholic servant leaders who are committed to rebuilding the Church and society. (Revised 3/3/2024)

Vision
Building on its foundation of Catholic spirituality and servant leadership, Global Outreach aspires to encourage and develop Catholic students to become global leaders. It hopes to engage its participants and supporters to prayerfully explore and live out Catholic teaching on global issues and to contribute to and support a civilization of love and a peaceful world. History
The idea of Global Outreach began at St. Mary Central High School (SMC) in Menasha, Wisconsin during the school year of 1989/90 when the Catholic schools of Neenah/Menasha were facing a need to restructure. While that restructuring was taking place, SMC was facing a serious enrollment crisis. In the face of that crisis, Global Outreach was conceived as a way to market the school internationally.

The concept was built on the premise that SMC had a highly marketable service to offer, i.e., a high quality, safe, one year Catholic high school experience for the children of families in other countries who could afford such an experience. The first seven students came in the fall of 1990 from Latin America, Japan, and Switzerland.

In the meantime, with the fall of communism, an opportunity opened in Central/Eastern and Northern Europe to assist the Church there in the formation of a new generation of young Catholic leaders. The idea was to utilize the structures of the Catholic Church, specifically its parochial secondary schools, to link Catholic families which had survived the persecution with Catholic families in the U.S., hoping that their children could share friendship and faith in the new era of religious freedom and inspire one another as fellow Catholics. This was an opportunity for SMC and other American Catholic high schools to become more catholic as well as more Catholic by sharing different Catholic faith experiences and traditions. It promised to be an opportunity for Catholic families, schools and parishes to participate creatively in the new evangelization. This vision of Global Outreach won immediate interest and support, giving American Catholics opportunities, after decades of praying for the conversion of Russia, to put their faith into action in a new era of hope. American Catholics could participate in the missionary activity of the Church without leaving their own homes. They would help the students prepare to do what Bishop Cirkle of Brno, Czech Republic, suggested when he spoke in Menasha in the mid-1990’s, i.e., “return as missionaries to their own countries.” Essential to this vision were the insights of Robert Greenleaf, author of “Servant Leadership,” who argued that if society is to be renewed, it must be renewed through institutions because institutions control our lives. He pointed out that our institutions are large and powerful, often inept, and sometimes corrupt. The way to change them is to form people of competence to have a servant ethic with a vision to take over institutions and change them to better serve the needs of the people. Also key to understanding the methodology of Global Outreach is to recognize that the real influence of a leader does not ultimately depend on that person’s own talent or charisma, but, rather, on the strength and clarity of the vision that the person articulates.

Presence
The vision of Global Outreach has remained constant – to invite carefully chosen young Catholics from the Church in Central/Eastern and Northern Europe to spend their junior year of high school in Catholic schools in the Midwest (Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Minnesota) so that they might learn how we American Catholics live our faith in a tradition of freedom and, at the same time, share with our youth, our schools and our parishes their strong faith commitment, helping to strengthen the spirituality of American Catholics, especially young Catholics. The vision of the program is summed up in the motto given to Catholic youth by our recent popes: “Come, help build a civilization of love.” Beginning in the fall of 1991 students from the then Czechoslovakia as well as Hungary began attending SMC as well as Roncalli High School in Manitowoc. Within a few years, all Global Outreach students were coming from Central/Eastern and Northern Europe.

Historical Timeline

1990 ~ Global Outreach welcomes its first students. They attended St. Mary Central in in Menasha, WI.

1991 ~ Global Outreach welcomes its first students (6) from Czechoslovakia and Hungary attend SMC Menasha, WI and Roncalli High School in Manitowoc, WI.

1992 ~ Global Outreach first students attend Catholic high schools in Nebraska through the leadership of the Notre Dame Sisters in Omaha. Grant monies from the Norbertines’ Augustine Stewardship Fund underwrite this effort. Other grant money from The Raskob Foundation and Our Sunday Visitor helps Global Outreach. The first GO summer trip including an international youth camp begins, enabling American Catholic youths and adults to learn about the culture and the Church in Central Europe.

1994 ~ Global Outreach becomes incorporated as a registered non-profit in Wisconsin and is included as an official Catholic organization in the Kennedy Directory under the Green Bay Diocese. The first student from Latvia comes to SMC. Xavier High School in Appleton (1993), Notre Dame Academy in Green Bay and Marinette Catholic Central (for two years) begin inviting Global Outreach students to attend their schools. Mrs. Mary Piette assumes the role of Executive Director.

1995 ~ The first students from Slovakia participate in the program; selections are coordinated by the Slovak Catholic School Association. Catholic Memorial in Waukesha and Madison Edgewood begin welcoming students.

1996 ~ The first students from Lithuania come as part of the program under the leadership of the Lithuanian Jesuits and with the cooperation of the Lithuanian Catholic School Association as well as with financial support from the Norbertines. Marquette U.H.S. in Milwaukee, WI, Newman Catholic Schools in Wausau, WI, Lourdes Academy High School in Oshkosh, WI, and Cretin-Derham Hall in St. Paul, MN, begin welcoming students.

1997 ~ Dominican High School in Whitefish Bay, WI, invites its first Global Outreach student.

1998 ~ McDonell H.S. in Chippewa Falls, WI welcomes its first Global Outreach student.

2004 ~ Global Outreach is approved for probationary certification by CSIET – the Council on Standards for International Education and Travel. Twenty-three (23) students are invited to participate in the program, a high mark for participation. The mission & vision of the program continues to be highly effective as does its small, closely knit structure. It maintained its certification with CSIET for one year.

2007 ~ GO Board of Directors welcomes Father Larry Seidl, Spiritual Director

2008 ~ Mary Piette, Global Outreach Executive Director, retires as its Director and joins the GO Board of Directors. GO welcomes its new Executive Director, Barbara Tota-Boryczka. First students born after "The Velvet Revolution" participate in the program.

2013 ~ Columbus Catholic High School in Marshfield, WI welcomes its first GO students.

2014 ~ Global Outreach welcomes its first students from Poland.

2020 ~ COVID-19 pandemic shortens the GO students participation in the GO program year participation in the Minnesota, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. Several students returned to their native countries where they continued to participate virtually in their American high school classes. A "Safer at Home" order also resulted in all GO students remaining in the US to attend school virtually. The COVID-19 pandemic also prevented Global Outreach from welcoming the 2020-2021 students. In-person Summer Camp in Lithuania is canceled. Creative efforts of the Global Outreach Alumni and the American Planning Team results in "Mini-Summer Camp" being conducted in the student's respective countries.

2021 ~ Although the COVID-19 pandemic continued to present barriers to the traditional in-person Summer Camp including the planned travel of the U.S. team to Lithuania, the GO Alumni and U.S. team conducted and completed Virtual Summer Camp 2021 in July. Global Outreach welcomed the 2021-2022 GO class to the U.S. on July 31. This class is unqiue as it includes many of the students who would have been part of the 2020-2021 class which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Global Outreach welcomes its first student from the Ukraine. Aquinas Catholic High School, La Crosse, WI, welcomes its first Global Outeach Student. GO received 80 GO Student Applications, the largest to date in its history. GO Candidate interviews were completed virtually.

2022 ~ GO Hungary Alumni welcomed GO Staff, 2021-2022 GO Alumni along wth alumni from prior years, 2022-2023 GO Students, and interested, potential future GO students to Piarist High School in Kecskemét, Hungary for Summer Camp. Russia launched a military invasion of Ukraine (June 24, 2022). On August 5, GO welcomed 22 students, the 2022-2023 GO class, to the U.S. New Student Arrival Orientation was blessed with visits, personal testimony, and gifts/talents of 5 GO Alumni (Daniel Svoboda, Valentín Harničár, Anna (Anika) Lackova Pastorecova, Ema Gromová, and Dorka Zsiborács). GO introduces a new 2-Step Selection Process for the determination/decision of the future 2023-2024 GO Students. All applications are read by the GO Application Review Committee. Students who are selected will participate in an in-person interview. Following the in-person interview, it is determined who will be accepted into the program, patiently waiting for their official acceptance "good news" letter that a host family has been found. Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, Victoriia (2021-2022) returns to McDonell Catholic High School (Chippewa Falls, WI) for the 2022-2023 academic year and completes her high school education. GO welcomed its second GO Student, Valeriia, to Regis High School (Eau Claire, WI).

2023 - GO Slovakia welcomed GO Staff, 2022-2023 GO Alumni along with alumni from prior years, 2023-2024 GO Students and potential future GO applicants to Summer Camp 2023 in Šaštín, Slovakia.
In total, 23 GO Students are welcomed to the US on August 10, 2023; 3 students are hosted by families in NE while 20 students are hosted in WI. Annychka is the first GO student from Ukraine to attend high school in the Diocese of Green Bay. The Global Outreach Catholic Exchange Program has been going strong for over thirty years! Given the changing dynamics in our ever evolving world we believe it is a good time to step back and reimagine the future for Global Outreach. With this understanding and committment, GO Staff, Board of Directors, GO Alumni, Friends/Supporters of GO, GO Nebraska Leadership will participate in "Visioning the Future of GO" session.
2024 - GO Poland welcomed GO Staff, 2023-2024 GO Alumni along with alumni from the prior years and potential future GO applicants to Summer Camp in Siedlec, Poland. GO Staff welcomed 22 students on August 8, 2024 to the US. A week later, Annychka (Ukraine) returned to the US to complete her senior year. She is the 2nd of 3 GO Students from Ukraine to return for a 2nd year due to the war and the uncertainties in their native country. Wisconsin is home to 21 students while Nebraska is home to 2 students.
